STXM 5 Coordinate System

To identify directions in STXM 5, we use the following coordinate system (see Fig. 1.1):

• X is positive in the outboard direction (towards the hallway) and negative in the inboard direction

• Y is positive up and negative down

• Z is positive downstream (in the direction of the x-ray beam) and negative upstream

This coordinate system follows the right-hand rule, so if you remember that Z is going downstream, you can easily recall all directions.
