Access to Data Files "Locally" and "On the Server"

Now let's lift the mystery of the "Open / Save Local Data File" and "Open / Save Data File on Server" options in SM_GUI (unless you already guessed or discovered it).

When a scan has been taken and the user clicks the "Save" button, the data file will be stored by the server computer in its data directory (no choice for the user).

All further "on server" operations will go through the STXM 5 network connection between SM_GUI and the server program. All "local" operations will go to the local file system of the computer where the GUI runs on (which can be the local hard drive, a CD, or even a network location which is mounted via some standard network protocol like NFS or SMB, see Sec. 8.4).

Since you want to have all your data files stored on the server so that you can access them through the xray1 web page11.2(you really don't want to store and collect every single data file locally during your run), we strongly recommend to use only the "save on server" option to overwrite data files with different display settings. Also, for opening recent files, most of the time it will make most sense to use the "on server" option unless you run in display-only mode. When opening an old data file, which you have on hard drive or CD, use the "local" option.

Since the servers' data directories are cross-mounted within the x1a network, you can also access recent files locally, but you should know what you are doing! See Sec. 8.4 for more information.

Note that a data file can be saved on the server only if it was just recorded or if it was opened from the server. We don't allow the transmission of a full data file from the client to the server, because we allow only a few changes to be made anyway (see Sec. 10.6).
