This chapter should give the beginner user enough info to get started. It assumes that everything is aligned properly (including the slits), that there is beam and that the microscope is ready to operate. Ask for help if you are not sure.
Two programs handle most of the control of the microscope. The SM_GUI program (see details in Chap. 5) provides a graphical user interface for most operations. The program sm_script (see Sec. 2.11.2) is used to do sequences of microscope operations with no user intervention. You'll need it to record "Stacks", which are sequences of images of the same sample region at closely spaced energies.
