Quick Summary

To do the detector calibration properly, you should understand the background as described in Michael's thesis and the next chapters. However, if you want to get up to speed quickly without reading everything right now, use the following guidelines to go through the calibration:

  1. Record a detector map file as described in Sec. 6.3.

  2. Record four or five dark scans as described in Sec. 6.3.

  3. Start the calibration program in IDL and specify the number of segments (8 is default):
            IDL> detcal_gui, sidet_n_segments=8

  4. Read the detector map file from "File" / "Read Detector Map File".

  5. Do the crosstalk correction as described in Sec. 6.5.

  6. Click the "Dark Current Correction" button and select all the dark scans you took above.

  7. If you want, click the "Dark Current Histogram Analysis" and "Dark Current Fourier Analysis" buttons. The program will create a number of files as noted in Sec. 6.8. Check them if they make sense, or to identify noise.

  8. Make sure the correct values for the detector dead time and eV per Femtocoulomb are entered in the two fields. The dead time is the delay plus width of the S2 pulse setting on the Quantum Composers timing module and should be 0.101ms. eV per Femtocoulomb should be 22594.25. Press Enter in the field after changing any of them.

  9. Load an initial setting for the C tune values from a C tune file or an existing calibration file. In the latter case, make sure you don't overwrite the other parameters previously obtained by checking only the mvolts_per_femtocoulomb checkbox when reading the calibration file.

  10. Click the "C Tuning" button and follow the instructions. For more information, see Sec. 6.9.

  11. Write out the detector calibration file ("File" / "Write Calibration File"). Name it appropriately and copy it to the correct location so that the microscope control program can find it (e.g., /mnt/x1a/sidet_calibration_stxmi.dat).
