VT100 terminal to BNLX1L

In general, you can telnet to bnlx1l from any window, but certain keys may not work appropriately. To ensure the correct key assignment for the VAX, use a VT100 terminal window [not sure how to do that under Linux!]. Do
  x1a-cryo% vtsmall
From that window, you can then do telnet bnlx1l to log onto the beamline VAX. You can even run IDL properly, if you do the following: On x1a-cryo, open up X windows access to the VAX by typing
  x1a-cryo% xhost bnlx1l

On bnlx1l, do

  bnlx1l% set display/create/trans=tcpip/node=x1a-cryo.nsls.bnl.gov
  bnlx1l% idl
  IDL> set_plot,'x'
and so on.
