Research Interests

Soft x-ray microscopy and diffraction based imaging of biological specimens.  I collaborate with Prof. Chris Jacobsen, using beamline 9.0.1 at the Advanced Light Source. We developed a scanning transmission x-ray microscope using zone plate focusing. The resolution is intermediate between that of light and electron microscopes. The specimen may be wet, and up to 10 microns thick. Using absorption spectroscopy, information about the microchemical environment may be obtained.

On diffraction based imaging Prof. Jacobsen and I collaborate with Dr. David Sayre, originator of the idea. Our experimental program started at the National Synchrotron Light Source, but is at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley since the fall of 2003.
