X1A Beamline Safety

Safety is of overriding importance in operations of the X1A beamline, and in any of our activities. According to your NSLS safety training, you have the right to issue a stop work order in any situation where you feel that safety is being compromised. Further information on beamline safety issues to be aware of is given in the first chapter of the beamline manual.

NSLS Safety Approval
Before any experiment can be run at the NSLS, you need to have Safety Approval for your experiment.This is accomplished through the NSLS PASS web system. The safety form obtained in this process has to be posted at the beginning of each new run.
Beamline Operations & Safety Awareness (BLOSA)
All users of X1A have to be BLOSA trained for our beamline. A designated trainer has to guide them through all steps of the current BLOSA Form. The training is valid for 2 years. Among the further information given by the NSLS trainers should pay special attention to the BLOSA Guidance.
Beamline Safety Checklist
At the start of each new run you have to check compliance of every item on the Beamline Safety Checklist.

• the ID number of the experimental safety approval form at hand
• checked, that all present participants in the experiment have valid BLOSA training
• the filled-out beamline safety checklist

With that information in-hand, contact the operations coordinator. At the beamline, dial 3456, wait for a beep, dial 5824, wait for another weird sound, and dial 5601 (X1A's extension). The operations coordinator will call you back and ask for the ID number on the safety approval form that you want to post. He or she will then come out to the beamline and have you sign all the paperwork.
